IFC Midnight picks up ‘Shining’ doc ‘Room 237’

Variety has just reported that the documentary based on The Shining, which premiered at Sundance, has been picked up by IFC Midnight. The film isn’t necessarily a documentary on the making of the film but more about theories and why the film has resonated so long with film culture.

IFC Midnight announced has acquired North American rights to director Rodney Ascher’s documentary “Room 237,” which concerns the theories surrounding and within Stanley Kubrick’s 1980 film “The Shining.”

The film, produced by Tim Kirk and scored by Jonathan Snipes and William Hutson, recently played at the Sundance Film Festival. IFC Midnight plans to release the film theatrically this year.

“Room 237” includes interviews with the fans and scholars with wildly different ideas about the true meanings of the film.

The deal was negotiated by Jeff Deutchman, director of acquisitions and productions for Sundance Selects/IFC Films and Betsy Rodgers, senior VP for Sundance Selects/IFC Films with Andrew Herwitz, president of The Film Sales Company, on behalf of the filmmakers.
