From the Press Release
Digital entertainment curator FilmBuff and IPF Productions announce that they have partnered to release the 2013 SXSW Festival hit Rewind This! exclusively on iTunes August 27. Click here to pre-order.
Directed by Josh Johnson, Rewind This! explores the enormous cultural and historical impact of the VHS tape. Featuring interviews with filmmakers including Atom Egoyan, Mamoru Oshii, and Jason Eisener; distributors; store owners; and die-hard VHS tape collectors, the film festival fave traces the many ways home video altered the film, social, and cultural landscapes. Offering a wealth of wild and weird titles, home video transformed the viewing habits and tastes of a generation of audiences. The documentary sheds an often unseen and forgotten light on the cult and mainstream causes and effects of the home video revolution.
“After watching Rewind This!, we immediately recognized the parallels between the rise of the VHS movement and the birth of the digital space,” says FilmBuff’s Head of Content Partnerships Steven Beckman. “Both revolutionized the ways in which film buffs could discover and consume movies.”
“Home video is arguably the most significant development in cinema since the birth of the art form,” says director Josh Johnson. “The ability to control what you watch and when you watch it has irreversibly changed the landscape of film forever. The subjects in our documentary are united by a resounding passion for that innovation, what it meant to their lives, and what it continues to mean for all of us as lovers of great movies.”
Beginning September 10, 2013, the film will also be available on all other leading broadband Video On Demand platforms including Amazon Instant Video, YouTube, Xbox, Sony Playstation, Cinemanow, and Vudu.
After premiering at the 2013 SXSW Film Festival, Rewind This! has gone on to play at other festivals including Independent Film Festival Boston and The Awesome Fest, and it will continue to play around the globe at Puchan International Fantastic Film Festival, Melbourne International Film Festival, and Fantasia International Film Festival. The film will also have theatrical screenings in Los Angeles, CA; Boston, MA; San Francisco, CA; Houston, TX; New Orleans, LA; Seattle, WA; Portland, OR; London, England; and Dublin, Ireland, among other cities.
