TIFF 2012 Will Inlcude ‘CLOUD ATLAS,’ ‘LOOPER,’ ‘ARGO,’ and ‘BYZANTIUM’ Among Others

With the fall movie season swiftly approaching, it’s not a stretch to say that many of the potential nominees for the Oscars and other end of year awards will finally be seeing a release.  This year is no different.  Though we have had a couple of films previously released that may be considered as possibilities in the awards race (Moonrise Kingdom, Beasts of the Southern Wild, and my personal favorite, The Grey), there’s a lot more right around the corner.  Some of these very films that many have high hopes for will first be seen by those living in Canada. Variety has released some of the upcoming films that will be making their debut at the 2012 Toronto International Film Festival.  Or one can simply say just TIFF.  Of those films announced, quite a few of them will have genre fans like myself quite giddy.

A big surprise for many might be that the new Terrence Malick (The Thin Red Line, Tree of Life) is in fact coming out this year. Many worried if this was even going to be an option for release this year.  Cloud Atlas is certainly a film that many are curious about if only for the fact that no one has seen a single shot or frame of that film at all.  Although, the concept art for the film – one of which can be found above – is pretty mind-blowing! Looper and Byzantium (Neil Jordan, who directed Interview With a Vampire) are two favorites around here that I have written a couple of articles about so far.  A film that I often forget about but still has me excited is Ben Affleck’s Argo.  I was blown away by Gone Baby Gone and entertained by the heist film The Town, both of which he previously helmed.  Joss Whedon fans will love to get their hands on his new feature which is said to be a modern version of the Shakespeare classic.  Finally, is a film starring everyone’s current celebrity crush: Ryan Gosling.  Teaming up once again with his Blue Valentine director, The Place Beyond the Pines has Gosling playing a motorcycle stuntmen who enters into a criminal underworld to provide for his family.  It sounds a lot like Drive, but I’m still anxiously awaiting it.  What films are you looking forward to this fall that are showing at TIFF?
