See If ‘V/H/S’ Will be Playing in Your City and When

It kind of goes without saying that horror is certainly an experience that is enhanced by viewing in a dark theater with a large group.  That is why Andy created and continues to present “Late Nite Grindhouse” each and every first weekend of the month.  Much like how comedies often depend on the environment and who you’re watching them with, horror films can change based on whether you’re watching it sitting on your couch at home with a few beers and pizza or if you have the anticipation of a live crowd feeding your appetite.  V/H/S is a mixed bag for me in terms of subject and style.  You can read my entire review of the film HERE.   While I do feel some of the scares work better on the big-screen, the presentation of the film and its all TOO apparent nod to the visual look of glitches and tracking lines found on old VHS tapes was an exhaustive test for my patience when I saw it at a film festival earlier this year.  So, although I always encourage horror fans to check out horror films in theaters, I also recommend that this film may be better suited for your television late at night on a Friday with friends.  You will be able to decide how you want to see the film when it hits VOD on August 31 and theaters beginning Oct. 5.  Adam Wingard (You’re Next, A Horrible Way to Die),  Ti West (The House of the Devil, The Innkeepers), David Bruckner (The Signal), Joe Swanberg (Silver Bullets), Glenn McQuaid (I Sell the Dead), and the group known as Radio Silence each tackle a story that creates the horror anthology V/H/S. Check out the trailer and the list of theaters and dates below.

When a group of petty criminals is hired by a mysterious party to retrieve a rare piece of found footage from a rundown house in the middle of nowhere, they soon realize that the job isn’t going to be as easy as they thought. In the living room, a lifeless body holds court before a hub of old television sets, surrounded by stacks upon stacks of VHS tapes. As they search for the right one, they are treated to a seemingly endless number of horrifying videos, each stranger than the last.

Somewhere between growing up on a steady diet of Saturday morning trips to the local comic-book shop, collecting an unhealthy amount of action figures, and frequent viewings of Ray Harryhausen and Hammer Horror films, came forth a nerdy boy that was torn between journalism and the arts. In high school, Michael found himself writing a movie column for the school newspaper. Yet, he went on to get a BFA in Studio Art at Webster University. When not writing about films, you can still find him discussing classic horror, collecting action figures, and reading Batman. Clearly, not much has changed.
