Rob Zombie’s 31 Debuts A Trailer
I’ll be honest, I think House of 1000 Corpses is, for better or worse, the most true product when Rob Zombie is in the director’s chair. While I personally like the film and think that it is his best film, there are plenty who would disagree. The reason why I love House of 1000 Corpses so much, even though it cribs heavily from two of Tobe Hooper’s earlier films, The Funhouse and The Texas Chain Saw Massacre, is that it feels like Rob Zombie at that point of time. Yes, it has music video asthetics but it also has a raw feeling to the film and it doesn’t adhere to any film standards. It’s odd, kinetic and, at times, harrowing. It is a nightmare encapuslated in a film presentation.
I enjoyed The Devil’s Rejects and felt that it was a step in the right direction for traditional film directors, but it also lacked what I loved about House of 1000 Corpses. It also introduced more of Zombie’s writing which, I think everyone can admit, needs some work. I have pretty much written off his Halloween and I have never seen the sequel. The Lords of Salem is definitely another entry that I think is on the same level as The Devil’s Rejects, if not better. However, it does suffer from the issues that I think most people have with Zombie’s films – Sherri and his dialogue for his characters.
Regardless, Zombie is a unique voice in the genre and people either love or hate him. I’ll take that over someone who is pretty vanilla. This September, Zombie’s new film 31 will hit screens in a limited release. Check out the trailer below.
