‘Orphanage’ Director lets Loose a Wave with ‘The Impossible’

It’ll be five long and grueling years by the time director Juan Antonio Bayona will return with his follow-up film to The Orphanage. Thankfully in those years, many film fans have discovered the brilliant debut feature film from the Spanish director that was sadly overlooked upon its initial release.  Time has been good to the 2007 horror outing that tells the ghostly tale of a young woman, her son, and a haunted old building.  The Impossible is scheduled to be released by Summit sometime in 2012.  Starring Naomi Watts and Ewan McGregor, the films tells the real-life horror of a family caught in a devastating tsunami.   The two previously co-starred in the 2005 thriller Stay. Rope of Silicon points out that a previous story found by The Playlist stated that Bayona hoped to recreate the terror of the real-life event that took place in Thailand “through a script with hints of horror and mystery and large doses of science fiction.”  Sounds both intriguing and tragic.  The new Spanish-language trailer for the film can be found below.  Sadly there are no subtitles with it, but the eerie visuals of the teaser tell everything.

Somewhere between growing up on a steady diet of Saturday morning trips to the local comic-book shop, collecting an unhealthy amount of action figures, and frequent viewings of Ray Harryhausen and Hammer Horror films, came forth a nerdy boy that was torn between journalism and the arts. In high school, Michael found himself writing a movie column for the school newspaper. Yet, he went on to get a BFA in Studio Art at Webster University. When not writing about films, you can still find him discussing classic horror, collecting action figures, and reading Batman. Clearly, not much has changed.
