Nolan Says that ‘Dark Knight Rises’ takes place 8 yrs. Later
Finally, we have some new details to report on Christopher Nolan’s final Batman film. Empire Magazine is releasing a special Dark Knight Rises issue on newsstands this Thursday which includes exclusive photos as well as interviews with the stars and director behind the film. Thankfully we don’t have to wait till then to get some of the juicy tidbits from the interviews. Empire has revealed a few excerpts as an early Thanksgiving gift for us to chew on. The following is from director Christopher Nolan:
“It’s really all about finishing Batman and Bruce Wayne’s story. We left him in a very precarious place. Perhaps surprisingly for some people, our story picks up quite a bit later, eight years after The Dark Knight. So he’s an older Bruce Wayne; he’s not in a great state.
He then goes on to discuss the film’s main villain Bane briefly.
“With Bane, we’re looking to give Batman a challenge he hasn’t had before. With our choice of villain and with our choice of story we’re testing Batman both physically as well as mentally.”
Actor Tom Hardy gives us a little bit more gory details.
“He’s brutal. Brutal. He’s a big dude who’s incredibly clinical, in the fact that he has a result-based and oriented fighting style. It’s not about fighting. It’s about carnage. The style is heavy-handed, heavy-footed, it’s nasty. Anything from small-joint manipulation to crushing skulls, crushing rib cages, stamping on shins and knees and necks and collarbones and snapping heads off and tearing his fists through chests, ripping out spinal columns. He is a terrorist in mentality as well as brutal action.”
Costume designer Lindy Hemming probably reveals the biggest secret for fans of the comic: Is Bane going to be injecting some sort of serum into himself to enhance his skills?
“He was injured early in his story. He’s suffering from pain and needs gas to survive. He can’t survive the pain without the mask. The pipes from the mask go back along his jawline and feed into the thing at his back, where there are two cannisters.”
As if all of that isn’t exciting enough for you, Nolan also admits that the prologue, in theaters on Dec. 21, will show “an introduction to Bane, and a taste of the rest of the film.” Next year is going to be another big one for comic-book geeks. Between the Avengers, a new Spiderman film, and the finale to Nolan’s Batman series, nerds across America will have a lot to be thankful for, this and next Thanksgiving.
For more details, make sure to check out the issue when it hits stores Thursday.
