MANDY LANE Director explains why the Upcoming Adaptation of WARM BODIES will be PG-13

After getting shafted with the release for one of the most talked about horror films this decade, All the Boys Love Mandy Lane, director Jonathan Levine seemed to move in another direction; away from horror.  Levine gave us the arthouse comedy The Wackness and continues in that tradition with the soon to be released cancer-comedy (I think I might have made up a new genre)  50/50.  While promoting 50/50, Levine sat down with fellow geek site Joblo and revealed some details about his next project, Warm Bodies.  Isaac Marion’s romantic zombie story follows a zombie who falls in love with the girlfriend of one of his recent victims.  To read about the tone and approach Levine has going into the film, keep reading.

When Joblo asked Levine if he was going to focus on the gore in Warm Bodies, Levine responded with this,

“We’re going for the romance, but we are trying not to pussy out on the gore. It is going to be PG-13 because I feel like the story is such that we don’t need to see heads exploding, and I always think it’s nice to have as many people able to see it as possible. I think this will be my first non R-rated movie and I’m not going for the exploding heads. It’s going to be more like action-packed, romantic kind of situation.”

In response to angering blood-thirsty fanboys, he had this to say,

“I know, I’m scared of them. I’m scared of them. But, I hope to make them happy and I hope to also kind of push the boundaries of the genre as well. And we will see… but I can’t think about it, I can’t think about it! I have to think about what is best for the movie. If they hate me, they hate me. They’ll still like Mandy Lane. That’s fine. [Laughing]”

Warm Bodies was sold as a hot property in Hollywood even before the book was released here in the states.  I guess it’s just another example of how the concept of a film is everything.  To give you some late summer reading, I have linked the book below so that you can purchase this highly-popular novel.  Warm Bodies is set to be released in 2012.

Somewhere between growing up on a steady diet of Saturday morning trips to the local comic-book shop, collecting an unhealthy amount of action figures, and frequent viewings of Ray Harryhausen and Hammer Horror films, came forth a nerdy boy that was torn between journalism and the arts. In high school, Michael found himself writing a movie column for the school newspaper. Yet, he went on to get a BFA in Studio Art at Webster University. When not writing about films, you can still find him discussing classic horror, collecting action figures, and reading Batman. Clearly, not much has changed.
