Listen to Mike Patton’s Score for ‘THE PLACE BEYOND THE PINES’ Now

It seems fitting that Mike Patton collaborated with director Derek Cianfrance on the score to his new film The Place Beyond the Pines.  On the director’s last film Blue Valentine, he employed the help of indie rockers Grizzly Bear to create an ethereal score that was equal parts lovely and somber.  The 1990’s is the decade that inspires Cianfrance’s new film and with it comes a musical icon from the 90’s that has created the score for the film.  Mike Patton is most famous for the bands Faith No More and Mr. Bungle but has been a part of a variety of other musical projects over the years.  His score for Cianfrance’s upcoming crime drama is sometimes like a modern noir jazz score with cool bass lines while other times it is a haunting and menacing with building crescendos that give way to loud piano bangs around every corner.  Don’t believe me . . . listen for yourself.  You can check out the entire score right now for free through Pitchfork.

The Place Beyond The Pines opens in select theaters beginning this Friday, March 29.

Somewhere between growing up on a steady diet of Saturday morning trips to the local comic-book shop, collecting an unhealthy amount of action figures, and frequent viewings of Ray Harryhausen and Hammer Horror films, came forth a nerdy boy that was torn between journalism and the arts. In high school, Michael found himself writing a movie column for the school newspaper. Yet, he went on to get a BFA in Studio Art at Webster University. When not writing about films, you can still find him discussing classic horror, collecting action figures, and reading Batman. Clearly, not much has changed.
