Late Nite Grindhouse Presents ‘MANIAC’ (2013)
During the first year of Late Nite Grindhouse, which was 2010, we had the opportunity to play William Lustig’s Maniac. Seeing it on the big screen reminded me how grimy the film was. Shot in 16mm, blown up to 35mm with the film grain adding a layer of dirt onto an already dirty film, Maniac is a film that is rare and unapologetic – which is why it has stood the test of time. After seeing the remake last year, I knew I had to bring this to the big screen. Together with IFC Midnight, Late Nite Grindhouse is proud to host the Midwest Theatrical Premiere of Maniac starring Elijah Wood.
The film is shot in first person but doesn’t seem gimmicky at all. Instead of 16mm film grain, it is another technique to make the viewer feel uncomfortable by putting said viewer in the head of a killer. It is obviously something Lustig was attempting to do with his film and it something that I think is done quite well with the remake.
Synopsis
Frank is the withdrawn owner of a mannequin store, but his life changes when young artist Anna appears asking for his help with her new exhibition. As their friendship develops and Frank’s obsession escalates, it becomes clear that she has unleashed a long-repressed compulsion to stalk and kill.
A 21st century Jack the Ripper set in present-day L.A., MANIAC is a re-boot of the cult film considered by many to be the most suspenseful slasher movie ever made – an intimate, visually daring, psychologically complex and profoundly horrific trip into the downward spiralling nightmare of a killer and his victims.
