HELLRAISER Remake Going For PG-13
This just makes no sense. I mean, I don’t even know how to explain this. I’m asked many times what is my favorite horror movie and for most who know me, it’s a challenge to answer. There are many points and factors to consider. Which is why my mind eventually goes to Hellraiser. Clive Barker’s sadomasochistic beauty introduced the horror genre to things of gore and disgust that we could have never fathomed before. He did it all with latex, leather, chains, and hell demons. The idea that a remake of a film so graphic and so relentless could be steered to the kiddies is appalling to me. Yet the wonderful Weinsteins would like to make it a reality. Why would they go this direction?
Not only have they settled on this new direction of the series but they already have an eye on a possible star of the movie. I don’t know if you saw All the Boys Love Mandy Lane, but it was a pretty good new age slasher that fell under the radar. Well Lane’s star Amber Heard is who the Weinsteins are looking to cast as the lead in this remake. She was also in The Stepfather and Pineapple Express. With a couple of upcoming projects in the horror/thriller genre, she is being labeled as the new Jamie Lee Curtis.
Denmark born director Christian E. Christiansen is looking to direct the film and was slated to direct the movie when original talks were in play. He has a new movie in theaters soon called The Roommate which looks like Single White Female in college. There is nothing that gets me excited about remakes and when it involves my favorite movie my passions run even deeper. Adding insult to injury by making it PG-13 is uncalled for. When will these productions company realize that they don’t need to make these movies geared towards these kids. Do you think they really care? PG-13 is not gonna boost the office sales especially for parents of these kids that remember what the original is about. I also have no clue how they are going to accomplish this film anyway. The name itself isn’t even demands a harsher rating. Why not take ideas from the original and make a truly new movie that has nothing to do with Hellraiser but hints back to it. They could even have a bunch of jersey shore people in it and call it a day. That’s how they would get box office success. Other wise I just see this as a failure from the moment the thought came up, not just to remake it but even more to emphasize that they want to gear it to a younger crowd. It just makes no sense.
