HALLOWEEN: Vengeance – A sequel being made for $500!

You would think fans and producers alike would have unanimously given up on the Halloween franchise following the financially and critically unsuccessful Halloween 2 by Rob Zombie.  Yet, one fan who happens to also work in the industry as a production designer, set dresser, and art director, feels he can pull together “a fan film and a tribute piece to pay homage to this particular series of films” on a shoe-string budget.  When I mean shoe-string, I mean the price of one of Johnny Depp’s meals while filming a Pirates of the Caribbean film.  Derek Hill is set out to make an effective sequel to the franchise entitled Halloween: Vengeance for $500!  Here’s what the inspired 30 yr. old has to say about the project.

This film is actually a remake of a film I did back in 2002. I remade the film just because I am a huge fan of “Halloween” and Michael Myers. This is a fan film and a tribute piece to pay homage to this particular series of films.

The original film was supposed to be a fun thing between fans. Once we started doing it, the project started gaining a lot of attention. The killer in the film is so recognizable that you can’t shoot scenes without people knowing exactly what you’re doing.

Eventually, that attention trickled down to LA. At the time I was a 21-year-old kid who was just making a film with his friends. Then, one day, I get this call from a representative with Dimension Films saying the company heard about our project. At that time I thought, “we’re going to go to jail for copyright infringement.” But we were actually invited to come down to a convention to meet the creators of the film.

Before many of you dismiss this story and think that this is never going to see the light of day, Hill describes a plan to use his industry connections to maybe get this film seen by other than just the handful of up-and-coming actors and fans who worked on the film.

Once we wrap production, the movie is going to go into post-production sometime at the beginning of the year. We’re looking at 6 months until its final cut. What we would like to do, because the film is shot locally with local talent, is hold a local screening for the cast and crew. So we’re hoping to get the film into something like the Visalia Fox Theatre.

From there, the film is going to be submitted to Dimension Films and all of the producers there. We want to submit it as the next possible movie. Rob Zombie has already said he doesn’t want to do another “Halloween” movie. But the film is a money maker and, of course, the fans want more Myers. You got to keep the franchise alive. As for me, I am pitching it as the next installment.

I honestly hope the best for this guy.  Though the idea of a huge fan remaking the series didn’t turn out so well last time.  We will keep you updated on this story as it further develops.

Update:

We found the trailer to the 2002 fan film that Derek showed at the 2005 30 Years of Terror Halloween convention (one that Andy was supposed to attend) on YouTube. We have included it below.

Somewhere between growing up on a steady diet of Saturday morning trips to the local comic-book shop, collecting an unhealthy amount of action figures, and frequent viewings of Ray Harryhausen and Hammer Horror films, came forth a nerdy boy that was torn between journalism and the arts. In high school, Michael found himself writing a movie column for the school newspaper. Yet, he went on to get a BFA in Studio Art at Webster University. When not writing about films, you can still find him discussing classic horror, collecting action figures, and reading Batman. Clearly, not much has changed.
