A SERBIAN FILM will finally get a US Theatrical and VOD release …In Edited Form
Yes, you read that correctly. The film that has seen much controversy at the film festivals it has played and even got a man arrested for showing it, will finally see the light of day in the US. Unfortunately, I guess the distribution company thinks that we can’t handle the version that has shocked audiences around the world. I guess we aren’t adult enough to be able to make our own decisions regarding what we can or can’t watch. If you want to read my review of the UNCENSORED version of A Serbian Film, you can click here. Beyond the break, you can find out more info regarding how Invincible Pictures will be releasing the film.
Twitch film has the news :
A Serbian Film will open on May 13th. In theaters, audiences will see an edited version that was recently passed withan NC-17 rating. The list of theaters is not yet available, though I’m assured that I’ll get it as soon as it is. They will be starting witha limited opening with hopes for a wider opening as demand increases. The same day, Invincible Pictures will offer a VOD version via FlixFling with a much stronger cut. I’m told that the VOD version still has two “minimal” cuts that amount to less than one minute. The NC-17 version will run 98 minutes, while the FlixFling version will run 103 minutes.
The article then goes on to talk a little about what they heard regarding a DVD release.
I have also seen rumors that A Serbian Film won’t get a home video release due to the controversial nature of the film. I am assured that A Serbian Film will be coming to Blu-ray and DVD later in the year. From what I understand the Invincible Uncut version will be available exclusively on Blu-ray, while the DVD should be the same as the theatrical NC-17 version of the film. This is still a bit up in the air, we have no date nor strong confirmation of home video details yet, but it WILL be out.
For horror fans who were hoping to check out the “original uncut” film that certainly made my top 10 of last year, I guess you might want to invest in a region free DVD player and find the European cut of the film.
A Serbian Film is not for everyone. In some cases, it might not even appeal to those who enjoy extreme films. Certain themes and images creep into the film that most likely will shock you just because you didn’t think a movie “would go there.” Yet, ultimately that is what the movie is about. Its story of a crazed movie director attempting to convey the grueling metaphor of life, speaks to how far some artists and directors will go to reveal their own artistic voice. Granted, this artistic expression is not for everyone . . . but that is the magic of art . . . it shouldn’t be for everyone. More importantly, it shouldn’t be something that is censored. It should be available for those who are interested. A Serbian Film is about limits: What limits an actor will go, what limits a director will go, and what limits a father will go for his family. I guess in a film that explores the extreme areas we are pushed to go as people, the US film industry has found their own limit.
