RAT GOD #1

Writer: Richard Corben
Artist: Richard Corben
Publisher: Dark Horse Comics
Price: $4
Description: Terrible things stalk the forests outside Arkham in this chilling original tale from comics master Richard Corben! An arrogant city slicker on a quest to uncover the background of a young woman from the backwoods finds horrors beyond imagining, combining Lovecraftian mutations with Native American legends.

Our Take: It’s RICHARD CORBEN, for crying out loud. The guy’s last few Edgar Allen Poe adaptations have singlehandedly proved you can be 74 and still be one of the best comic book artists in the industry! This is especially exciting, as it’s his own tale, and it’s Lovecraftian! What’s not to love?

SOUTHERN DOG

SOUTHERN DOG TP

Writer: Jeremy Holt
Artist: Alex Diotto
Publisher: Danger Zone
Price: $15
Description: When awkward high school teen Jasper Dixon sustains an injury during a hunting excursion with his family, his infected wolf bite combined with the hormonal changes of puberty triggers a disturbing physical transformation.

Our Take: A combination of racial politics and werewolf horror that’s not nearly as subtle or tactful as it should be but is still intriguingly effective. A must have for werewolf fans and those looking for some social commentary with their horror.

PROMETHEUS OMEGA

PROMETHEUS: OMEGA ONE-SHOT

Writer: Kelly Sue DeConnick
Artist: Augustin Alessio
Publisher: Dark Horse Comics
Price: $5
Description: Angela and her fellow survivors are stranded on LV-223, but their mission is not over yet. The answer to their quest could be hidden deep underground, but the strangest nightmare of all stands in their way. Our Take: Don’t let the Prometheus title fool you, this ties into the Predator and Aliens titles that also comprised the Fire & Stone quadrilogy, which we covered heavily last year. This capstone title entwines the various threads while telling its own story in the capable hands of Fire & Stone mastermind Kelly Sue DeConnick. In Shops: February 11th, 2015

TREES

TREES TP

Writer: Warren Ellis
Artist: Jason Howard
Publisher: Image Comics
Price: $15
Description: Ten years after they landed. All over the world. And they did nothing, standing on the surface of the Earth like trees, exerting their silent pressure on the world, as if there were no-one here and nothing under foot. Ten years since we learned that there is intelligent life in the universe, but that they did not recognize us as intelligent or alive. Our Take: Yeah, it’s sci-fi and consequently shouldn’t really be covered in a column on a horror movie website, not at least without having strong horror influences ala the Prometheus comic previewed above. But I reviewed it profusely and it’s such a damn good series it’d be criminal not to highlight it. In Shops: February 11th, 2015
