30 September Slashers: Day 20-TRUTH OR DARE?
Let’s get on with it, tonight’s film is a balls to the wall gore film that also works as a slasher. Perhaps less extreme than films such as Das Komabrutale Duel or Violent Shit, but it has many of the same esthetics. These types of films aren’t big on scripts, their body counts are insanely high, their budgets are minimal at best, and they give an excuse for the protagonist to unleash carnage with an arsenal of guns, machetes, and anything that will lay waste to a human body. Now that you know what you are getting yourself into, lets play a game of Truth or Dare?
Day 20: I Dare You to Watch This Film….Truth or Dare?
Mike is feeling pretty damn good about himself. He just got a raise and everything is coming up roses… that is until he comes home to find some dude givin’ the ole pipe to his wife, Sandra. Needless to say, he is very upset (I would be too, she was about a 10) and contemplates killing himself. He can’t go through with it but soon picks up a hitchhiker (another babe), and they decide to go on a camping trip together. They begin playing a game of truth or dare and things turn creepy when she begins daring him to mutilate himself. This includes but is not limited to, cutting off his finger and cutting out his tongue. We then make a chilling discovery about the hitchhiker as well as realize that Mike is off his rocker. Mike goes to a mental hospital but soon gets released on good behavior. Big mistake, because he is going to get revenge on his wife once and for all….and take out a few dozen others as well.
As I mentioned in the introduction, the budget for this film is miniscule. So, I think you know what your getting yourself into (I think they must have blown most of their budget getting ole Mike’s wife to get naked in the film). The plot is minimal, and we basically get the point after the first 15 minutes. Lets be serious though, that’s not why we’re watching this film to begin with. The gore is surprisingly really good and includes an impressive head explosion from a grenade. The director has no scruples as Mike not only lays waste to a baby and its mother but also takes out a bench full of senior citizens.
If you’re a fan of late eighties/early nineties gore films, then this film is probably right up your alley. Although there was almost no plot, it managed to keep my attention. The film can be streamed through Netflix and is also available on DVD. I know we have already looked at a film by this director, but I couldn’t resist revisiting another film by the great Tobe Hooper. Tomorrow’s film will be his remake of Toolbox Murders.
