The OLDBOY Remake (unfortunately) Lives on with a rumored Spike Lee at the Helm
Oldboy is something we genre fans know and love. What started out as an ambitious revenge thriller that caught the attention of movie geeks, has now become a modern day classic with many and has even reached the rank of #95 on IMDB’S Top 250. As the exposure to this gripping and graphic drama continues to expand, you can almost hear the continuous clatter of chairs and papers shuffling from meetings with the big-shots in Hollywood. At one point a Hollywood remake was planned with Will Smith playing the film’s hero (though that may not be the most appropriate term for the character) and Spielberg was set to produce. Thankfully that project was cancelled by studios DreamWorks and Mandate Films. Much to my disappointment, the remake is not entirely dead as Twitch Film has learned that Spike Lee is now rumored to take over the project. Though I respect the talented and sometimes controversial director, no one can match Park Chan-Wook’s version of the manga Oldboy. The remake is still under the control of Mandate and features a script by Mark Protosevich (Thor, I Am Legend). I’m trying not to be negative about this news but am finding it quite hard to do.
