James Gunn Unveils the Darker Side of Crime-fighting
Super is the upcoming film from St. Louis’ own horror icon, James Gunn! Gunn has established a firm stance in the world of horror and fantasy with his over the top humor in Tromeo and Juliet, to the Dawn of the Dead remake’s brutal storytelling, to one of the best horror comedies in the past ten years, Slither. Attempting to transform the mold of the superhero formula, Gunn is planning on releasing his anti-hero, The Crimson Bolt, on audiences next year. Starring Rainn Wilson, Ellen Page, Liv Tyler, Nathan Fillion, and Kevin Bacon, Super tells the tale of a man whose drug-addicted wife leaves him. In an attempt to re-discover himself, Rainn Wilson decides to create an alter-ego (The Crimson Bolt). With the help of Libby, aka Bolty (Ellen Page), the two of them head out as vigilantes-for-hire. If you head on over Gunn’s website, http://www.jamesgunn.com/, you can view footage of the cast answering questions at Comic-Con, and a new photo of The Crimson Bolt in his homemade crime-fighting apparel. Descriptions of the footage shown at Comic-Con, include Wilson pummeling a guy’s face with a wrench after the man cuts in line at the movie theater (then punching his girlfriend), and Page using dynamite as a means of punishing bad guys. With the amazing cast he has assembled, and the off-beat humor that he brings to the table, Super seems to be another example of James Gunn’s talent as a genre filmmaker.
