Does the Red-Band Trailer For ‘AFTERSHOCK’ Make Much of an Impact?

A film that I was anxiously awaiting at last year’s Fantastic Fest was Nicolas Lopez’s English language debut Aftershock.  With Eli Roth serving as producer and co-star of the film, this Chilean set horror film had me very excited.  I’ve always been a fan of Eli Roth as most (not all) of the projects he has produced or directed piqued my interest.  For what it’s worth, I was very disappointed with the bloody disaster flick.  After a quick but standard set-up that is reminiscent of Roth’s Hostel, the horror kicks in but the film never finds what kind of horror film it wants to be.  At times playful and fun while other times brutal and mean-spirited, the overall tone of the film is never consistent and goes up and down like the horizontal pendulum of a seismograph.

On the contrary, I will say that the new red-band trailer for the film is pretty good.  Watching it certainly makes me curious if my reaction would be different or the same after a second viewing.  One thing is certain though in both the trailer and something that I felt initially when I saw the film: The devastation and kills look cheap to me.  That being said, I still want to revisit the film and will be able to when it hits limited theaters on May 10.

In Chile, an American tourist’s vacation goes from good to great when he meets some beautiful women travellers. But when an earthquake ravages the underground nightclub they are in, a fun night quickly turns to terror. Escaping to the surface is just the beginning as they face the nightmarish chaos above ground.

Somewhere between growing up on a steady diet of Saturday morning trips to the local comic-book shop, collecting an unhealthy amount of action figures, and frequent viewings of Ray Harryhausen and Hammer Horror films, came forth a nerdy boy that was torn between journalism and the arts. In high school, Michael found himself writing a movie column for the school newspaper. Yet, he went on to get a BFA in Studio Art at Webster University. When not writing about films, you can still find him discussing classic horror, collecting action figures, and reading Batman. Clearly, not much has changed.
