‘WE ARE WHAT WE ARE’ Remake Gets Picked Up By eOne at Sundance

Jim Mickle’s (Stake Land, Mulberry Street) remake of the 2010 Mexican film We Are What We Are debuted at Sundance on Friday night.  Critics and attendees at the snowy film festival warmed up to the new updated version and applauded the gory story of a family of cannibals.  So it should come as no surprise that the film got picked up for U.S. distribution.  By whom, you ask?  The U.S. rights were secured by eOne Distribution.  It is being reported that eOne, a Canadian company that is in the process of merging with Alliance Films, beat out several other genre labels to take the horror film including Magnolia, Lionsgate, and Drafthouse Film.  In 2012, the company was behind the U.S. theatrical release of A Late Quartet, Iron Sky, and the David Cronenberg film Cosmopolis.  Congratulations to Mickle and everyone involved with the film as it is a film that I’m curious to check-out and by a young horror director who I greatly respect.  If you haven’t seen Stake Land yet, I can’t encourage you enough to check out this fresh amalgamation of the post-apocalyptic and vampire genres.

For now, check out the poster for We Are What We Are below.

Somewhere between growing up on a steady diet of Saturday morning trips to the local comic-book shop, collecting an unhealthy amount of action figures, and frequent viewings of Ray Harryhausen and Hammer Horror films, came forth a nerdy boy that was torn between journalism and the arts. In high school, Michael found himself writing a movie column for the school newspaper. Yet, he went on to get a BFA in Studio Art at Webster University. When not writing about films, you can still find him discussing classic horror, collecting action figures, and reading Batman. Clearly, not much has changed.
